Свт. Амвросий родился в 340 г. в семье наместника Галлии, провинции на территории современной Франции. После смерти отца семья вернулась в Рим. Там будущий святитель получил юридическое образование. Был назначен наместником северных областей Италии и жил в Медиолане (Милане). В 374 г. умер местный епископ. Начались раздоры между христианами и сторонниками ереси арианства – каждая из сторон хотела поставить своего епископа. Амвросий, как градоначальник, обратился с речью к толпе. И вдруг раздался детский голос: «Амвросий – епископ!» Возглас был подхвачен народом. Амвросий в то время даже еще не был крещен. Он пытался отказаться, решил бежать из Милана. Решающим стало слово императора Валентиниана. Амвросий подчинился, принял крещение и стал епископом. Тотчас же он раздал всю свою собственность на украшение храмов и пропитание сирот. St. Ambrose was born in 340 into the family of the governor of Gaul, a province in what is now France. After the death of his father, the family returned to Rome. There the future saint received his legal education. He was appointed governor of the northern regions of Italy and lived in Mediolana (Milan). In 374, the local bishop died. Dissensions began between Christians and supporters of the heresy of Arianism - each side wanted to appoint its own bishop. Ambrose, as the mayor, addressed the crowd. And suddenly a child's voice rang out: "Ambrose is a bishop!" The cry was picked up by the people. Ambrose at that time was not even baptized yet. He tried to refuse, decided to flee from Milan. The word of Emperor Valentinian was decisive. Ambrose obeyed, was baptized, and became a bishop. He immediately gave away all his property for decorating temples and feeding the orphans. He became famous as a preacher, theologian, church writer. Through his prayers, miracles were performed more than once. The relics of the saint can be venerated in the Ambrose Basilica in Milan.
