Прп. Паисий Величковский (р. 1722, Полтава) в 17 лет ушел в монастырь. Одно время подвизался на Афоне, где основал скит пророка Илии. Там приобщился к традициям афонского монашества, умной молитве, строгому уставу местных обителей. Осн. делом жизни было устройство монашеской жизни в Валахии, на территории нынешней Молдавии. В монастыре Драгомирны, а позже в Секуле и Нямецком монастыре, прп. ввел устав по чину Афона. Осн. идеи устава: нестяжательность, послушание, умная молитва и чтение книг, труд и благотворительность. От учеников св. Паисия афонский опыт распространился по всем российским монастырям.
