Недолго он, вольный, в неволе прожил.
Он был так доверчив и молод,
Так много таилось в нем крепнущих сил,
Но их беспощадно, их жадно скосил
Мертвящий, безжалостный холод.
Его здесь пугала молчащая мгла,
Пугали бесшумные тени,
И ночь на душе безраздельно была,

И дни, непрерывно всплывая из тьмы,
Ползли, не тревожа молчанья.
А дальше... Он видел: за дверью тюрьмы -
Холодные ночи полярной зимы

Шумящее, мстящее пламя костра
В день судный тем выше взовьется.
