История кеманчи – смычкового четырехструнного инструмента уходит в глубокую древность. Резонатор ее представляет собой как бы шар с усеченным верхом, обтянутым мембраной. К нижней части кеманчи прикреплен металлический наконечник, при помощи которого играющий опирает кеманчу на бедро чуть выше колена. Играют на ней лукообразным смычком, держа инструмент вертикально.
Кеманча по тембру напоминает скрипку. В древности кеманча состояла из одной струны, потом прибавились еще две, современная кеманча состоит из четырех струн. Начиная с ХII в. Низами Гянджеви, в ХIII в. известный музыковед и композитор Абдулгадир Мараги, живший в ХVI в. большой узбекский поэт Алишер Навои, а также Мухаммед Физули среди других музыкалььных инструментов упоминают и кеманчу. Как видно, наибольшей популярности кеманча достигла в ХVI-ХVII вв.
