Неизвестные по происхождению преподобные Феофил и Иаков несколько времени подвизались на острове Коневце1) вместе с преподобным Арсением Коневским (память 12/25 июня), и, может быть, там они начали свои иноческие труды.
Затем в 1395 или 1396 годах оба подвижника оставили Коневец и перешли на речку Омучу. Здесь, в округе Демянского погоста, в 65 верстах от города Порхова они основали пустынь в честь Успения Божией Матери. Основателем обители почитался преподобный Феофил, судя по тому, что она называлась Феофиловой пустынью, тогда как преподобный Иаков был ее устроителем. Преставились преподобные в начале XV столетия, около 1412 года. День кончины преподобного Иакова неизвестен, преподобный же Феофил преставился 29 декабря. Празднование преподобным местное. Святые мощи угодников Божиих почивают под спудом, в храме Успения Божией Матери, с 1764 года приходском.
