Бранль – обобщающее название для танцев XVI–XVII вв. Свои варианты бранля имелись в разных провинциях Франции – Бургундии, Пуату, Шампани, Пикардии, Лотарингия, Обаруа, Бретани. В XV в. бранль завершал бас-данс, в XVI–XVII вв. стал самостоятельным танцем, разновидности которого объединяли в сюиты. Порядок частей в бранль-сюите следующий: бранль двойной, бранль простой, бранль веселый, монтиранде и гавот; порядок может изменяться, однако гавот всегда стоит в конце. Бранль часто включался в балеты эпохи барокко, даже когда сам танец уже вышел из обихода.
