"Ода до радості" була написана у 1785 році Фрідріхом Шиллером для дрезденської масонської ложі за проханням його друга-масона Христіана Готфріда Кьорнера. Ода була змінена у 1793 році та покладена на музику Людвигом ван Бетховеном. Музика увійшла до складу знаменитої 9-ої симфонії. У 1972 році вона була прийнята у якості офіційного гімну Ради Європы, а з 1985 року - Європейських спільнот (Європейського союзу з 1993 року).
