Святой Варлаам жил в Антиохии. Во время гонений на христиан при императоре Диоклетиане был схвачен и Варлаам. Был он уже очень немолод, но римляне не испытывали снисхождения ни к детям, ни к старикам. Судья, желая принудить святого к отречению от Христа, стал издеваться над Варлаамом. Он приказал подвести старца к языческому алтарю и на вытянутую его правую ладонь положить зажженный ладан. Мучитель думал, что Варлаам не выдержит и бросит ладан на алтарь и так принесет жертву идолу. Но святой мужественно терпел, пока у него не сгорели на руке пальцы. После этого св. Варлаам предал свою душу Господу (+ 304).
