Свт. Амвросий родился в 340 г. в семье наместника Галлии, провинции на территории современной Франции. После смерти отца семья вернулась в Рим. Там будущий святитель получил юридическое образование. Был назначен наместником северных областей Италии и жил в Медиолане (Милане). В 374 г. умер местный епископ. Начались раздоры между христианами и сторонниками ереси арианства – каждая из сторон хотела поставить своего епископа. Амвросий, как градоначальник, обратился с речью к толпе. И вдруг раздался детский голос: «Амвросий – епископ!» Возглас был подхвачен народом. Амвросий в то время даже еще не был крещен. Он пытался отказаться, решил бежать из Милана.
