The expression "iron will" was something of an idiom that characterized, not without a grain of irony, the strong-willed qualities of the German people, and was widespread in the middle of the 19th century. The story is based on true events relating to the life of Nikolai Leskov, when he served with the Scott and Wilkens Company (1857-1860). The company did business all over Russia, and Leskov, as a representative of the company, had a chance to visit many cities at that time. Three-year wanderings in Russia were the reason that Nikolai Leskov took up writing.
