Участник знаменитого боя у Чемульпо (1904). 27 января (9 февраля) капитан «Варяга» Всеволод Фёдорович Руднев получил от японского контр-адмирала Уриу ультиматум: спустить флаг и до 12 часов покинуть порт, иначе русские корабли будут атакованы на рейде. Он не принял ультиматум, и в полдень, выйдя из порта, вступил в неравный бой со всей вражеской эскадрой, показав тем самым, пример беспримерного мужества и героизма. Для выражения восхищения русским командиром, капитаны иностранных судов ,стоявших там же на рейде, встретили гордо идущий «Варяг» гимном России. Капитаны кораблей построили команды на палубах и отдали честь российским морякам.
