Фантазия Мусоргского изобразила мощный динамичный образ Бабы-Яги, картину «нечистой силы», наполненную «бесовскими» диссонансами (уже в самом первом такте — резкий прыжок на большую септиму). Вначале звучит несколько редких аккордов-толчков, затем они учащаются, имитируя «разбег», с которого начинается «полёт в ступе». Звуковые «кляксы» изображают небрежность и «грязь» в образе Бабы-Яги. Неравномерно расставленные акценты имитируют хромую походку «костяной ноги». На фоне этих звуков «взлетает» играемая полными аккордами простая и яростная мелодия, словно сметающая всё на своём пути. Затем после перехода наступает совершенно другая средняя часть пьесы, тихая и тревожная, полная неустойчивых звуков — то ли полёт, то ли ночной лес. Затем — третья часть — резко врывается повтор первой темы, и завершается пьеса фортепианной каденцией из быстрых попеременных звуков через октаву во «взлетающем» направлении, которые в конце концов без перерыва «врезаются» в первый аккорд финальной пьесы — «Богатырских ворот».
