У животных много своей, непонятной людям мудрости. Птицы особенно чутки к переменам погоды и задолго предугадывают их, но часто бывает, что перелетных странников на середине безбрежного моря вдруг застигнет внезапный ураган, нередко со снегом. До берега далеко, силы ослаблены дальним полетом. Тогда погибает вся стая, за исключением малой частицы наиболее сильных. Счастие для птиц, если встретится им в эти минуты морское судно. Целой тучей опускаются они на палубу, на рубку, на снасти, на борта, точно вверяя в опасности свою маленькую жизнь человеку. И суровые моряки никогда не обидят их трепетной доверчивости. Морское прекрасное поверье говорит также, что неизбежное несчастье грозит тому кораблю, на котором была убита птица, просившая приюта.
