Центральное Adagio, как и в скрипичной сонате, полно спокойного созерцания. Но это уже не только «излияние чувств». Музыка медленной части несет на себе печать философского раздумья. Торжественно и спокойной звучат мажорные и минорные варианты темы (снова излюбленное сопоставление одноименных тональностей). В спокойной созерцательности и благородной сдержанности этой музыки, может быть, сильнее всего сказываются шубертовские черты, перенесенные на русскую почву вдумчивым лириком — скитальцем, которому, несомненно, был близок внутренний мир одиноких героев Шуберта.

The central Adagio, as in the violin sonata, is full of calm contemplation. But this is not only an "outpouring of feelings." The music of the slow part bears the stamp of philosophical meditation. The major and minor versions of the theme sound solemnly and calmly (again, a favorite juxtaposition of the keys of the same name). In the calm contemplation and noble restraint of this music, perhaps, the Schubert features transferred to Russian soil by the thoughtful lyricist, the wanderer, who undoubtedly was close to the inner world of lonely heroes of Schubert, most strongly affected.
