Кавказ вошёл в литературное наследие Михаила Юрьевича как территория бесконечной свободы и дикой вольности, где человек противостоит заведомо превосходящим его силам стихии, пространством бесконечной авантюры, боя с природой и боя с самим собой. В поэме отражены обычные лермонтовские мотивы связанные с бегством романтического героя, из родимых мест, где он не понят, не признан, в далёкие неведомые края. Но в «Мцыри» развивается обратная ситуация. Здесь герой бежит наоборот на родину, и вместе с тем загадочную и неизвестную для него, так как слишком юным он был вывезен оттуда, чтобы в его памяти сохранились ясные картины той. Это произведение – гимн Лермонтова его любимой Грузии, ее могучему духу и непоколебимой воле.
