Окончил Московскую консерваторию (1925) у Р. М. Глиэра и Н. Я. Мясковского. Во второй половине 1920-х гг. считался одним из наиболее талантливых композиторов авангардного склада, входил в Ассоциацию современной музыки (АСМ). Эксперименты Мосолова в области музыкального конструктивизма — прежде всего, симфонический эпизод «Завод. Музыка машин» (1928, из неосуществленного балета «Сталь») и вокальные пьесы «Четыре газетных объявления (из „Известий“ ВЦИКа)» (1926) — вызвали большой интерес как в СССР, так и за рубежом.
