Былина Вольга и Микула была записана в конце XIX века от онежского сказителя Ивана Трофимовича Рябинина. Пение этого сказителя слышали многие выдающиеся русские музыканты, поэты, писатели. Напев этой былины был неоднократно использован русскими композиторами в своих произведениях. Голос Рябинина был записан на фонограф, и восковой валик с его записью и по ныне хранится фонограмм архиве Пушкинского дома в Петербурге.
