В каунасское гетто, расположенное в пригороде Каунаса Вилиямполе (ранее — Слободка), было загнано 30 тыс. евреев. До этого тысячи евреев — жителей Каунаса уже были убиты. Партиями их отсюда гнали в близлежащий IX форт (ранее — филиал каунасской каторжной тюрьмы), где расстреливали. Лишь 28 октября 1941 г. было расстреляно 10 тыс. евреев.
Каунасское гетто было ликвидировано и сожжено в первой половине июля 1944 г. 2 тыс. его узников погибло, 6 тыс. было вывезено в Германию.
Немногим более 500 евреев смогли вырваться из гетто и присоединится к советским партизанам в лесах Южной Литвы и Белоруссии .Из 37000 евреев Ковно, выжить удалось лишь 3000.
