Это сборник прелюдий и фуг во всех 24 тональностях (12 мажорных и 12 минорных).
Во времена Баха фортепиано, в современном понимании, не существовало.
Были и проблемы с настройкой имеющихся клавишных инструментов (собирательное название которых -- клавир). Как раз в это время появились способы настройки (темперации), которые уравнивали в правах разные тональности (до того тональности делились на чистые и "с волками" -- грязными интервалами).
Поэтому Бах решил использовать новое качество новых клавиров для обучения игре во всех тональностях...
Но получился не учебник, а шедевр!
