Прп. Евфимий Великий был родом из г. Мелитины близ реки Евфрат. Родители его долгое время не имели детей и принесли обет посвятить будущего ребенка Богу. Отец умер вскоре после рождения сына. Мать, исполняя обет, отдала Евфимия на воспитание своему брату − священнику. Со временем Евфимий принял монашество. Евфимию поручили управление всеми городскими монастырями. Но он искал настоящего монашеского молитвенного подвига, безмолвия и аскезы. Он тайно оставил город и удалился в Святую Землю. Там Евфимий встретил др. подвижника – прп. Феоктиста. Они поселились в пещере в горах. Вскоре к подвижникам начали стекаться др. иноки. Евфимий стал духовником братии. За подвижническую жизнь и твердое исповедание православной веры Евфимий получил наименование Великого. Тяготясь общением с миром, он иногда отправлялся в странствования, жил в пустыне и пещерах в молчании и молитве. После его возвращения некоторые из братии видели, что, когда он совершал Божественную литургию, огонь сходил с небес и окружал прп. Евфимия. Умер в возрасте 97 лет.
