"Двойник" - повесть о том, как в одном человеке могут поразительным образом сочетаться светлая и темная стороны характера. Яков Петрович Голядкин, ничем не примечательный титулярный советник, вызывающий у сослуживцев и знакомых только снисходительные улыбки, вдруг начинает вести себя странно: говорит резкости, по-другому одевается, настаивает на своем мнении. Критики часто называли это произведение "описанием типичного душевного расстройства". Но повествует автор не столько о болезни, сколько о том, что толкает робкого, незаметного чиновника к безумию.
