It is an adaptation of the Ukrainian song "Shchedryk" by composer Nikolai Leontovich, first performed in December 1916 by the National Choir of Ukraine during a tour of Europe and America. The song was presented to an American audience on October 5, 1921 at Carnegie Hall.
