Вальс-фантазия был написан Глинкой в 1839 году для фортепиано. В 1845 г. Композитор оркестровал его, а в 1856 г. Создал новую оркестровую редакцию. Обратившись к простому бытовому танцу, Глинка наполнил его глубоким психологическим содержанием, значительно развил, симфонизировал. Скромный танец вырос в волнующую лирическую поэму.
Основная тема вальса проникнута задумчиво-печальным настроением. Наличие в теме 4-й повышенной ступени, остающейся без разрешения, придает мелодии щемящий оттенок. Основная тема возвращается много раз. С ней чередуются вальсовые напевы, передающие другие психологические состояния, другие оттенки чувства. Это то элегически-грустные, то драматически-взволнованные, то пленительно изящные. Их чередование с главной темой создает форму рондо.
«Вальс-фантазия» Глинки явился тем зерном, из которого выросла русская лирико-психологическая симфоническая музыка, посвященная раскрытию внутреннего мира, душевных переживаний человека.
В «Вальсе-фантазии», как и в балетных сценах своих опер, Глинка показал высокий образец подлинной симфонизации танца.

Waltz-Fantasy was written by Glinka in 1839 for piano. In 1845 the Composer orchestrated it, and in 1856 created a new orchestral edition. Turning to a simple household dance, Glinka filled it with a deep psychological content, greatly developed, symphonized. The humble dance has grown into an exciting lyrical poem.
