Действие рассказа происходит недалеко от Аркхема. Рассказчик приезжает туда, чтобы наметить место для водохранилища. The story takes place near Arkhem. The narrator arrives there to map out a place for the reservoir. He stumbles upon a “damned wasteland”: “The earth was covered with piles of gray dust or ash, for some reason untouched by the wind. Not a blade of grass grew around her. ” Passers-by did not reply to him anything intelligible about the origin of this strange phenomenon, and only warned him not to listen to the “nonsense of the crazy old man Amy Pierce.” He decides to find out about the secret of this place and turns to Emmy.
