Музыку создал в начале 1840-х Николай Девитте. К концу XIX века информация о первоначальных авторах затерялась. Романс подвергся фольклоризации и стал популярной народной песней - ее варианты см. ниже, причем герой гибнет не обязательно на войне - иногда при побеге на каторжном этапе. В популярных ныне вариантах обычно упоминается река Дон ("не для меня Дон разольется..."), но известны и другие версии - "Не для меня Буг разольется", "Не для меня Дунай разольется" (в русской среде Бессарабии) и так далее.
