ВВИА «Зодиак» под управлением Яниса Лусенса был организован в конце 70-х студентами Латвийской Государственной консерватории. Ансамбль начал исполнять необычную для советской эстрады электронно-синтезаторную музыку с «космическими» звуками, взяв за образец такие группы, как Space и Kraftwerk. Дебютный альбом «Диско Альянс» был выпущен в 1980 году. Тогда же латышские музыканты написали саундтрек к документальному фильму о космонавтах «Звёздная палитра», в ходе работы посетив Звёздный городок и познакомившись с космонавтами. Названия композиций на следующем альбоме «Музыка во Вселенной» недвусмысленно отсылают к космической тематике.
Записи «Зодиака» расходятся по СССР большими тиражами, по некоторым данным, их тираж составил до 20 миллионов экземпляров. В 1985 году выходит пластинка с записями саундтреков к фильмам «Экипаж машины боевой» и «Женские радости и печали», исполненный «Зодиаком» на музыку композитора Виктора Власова.
Последний номерной альбом «Зодиака» был выпущен в 1989 году и назывался «In memoriam» (В Память). Это концептуальный альбом, посвящённый латышской культуре и архитектуре Риги. На нём композиор Лусенс продемонстрировал некоторый уклон в сторону рок-музыки. В 1990-е ансамбль прекратил существование, но в последние годы снова начал выступать, исполняя старый материал.
Уже в начале XXI века композиция «Перезагрузка» дуэта PPK — ремикс композиции «Зодиак» с дебютного альбома латышской группы — занял первые позиции в британских чартах.
Фрагменты из композиций с альбома «Музыка во Вселенной» используются как музыкальные заставки в научно-популярной программе «Поиск» на Радио России.

The Zodiak Air Force, led by Janis Lusens, was organized in the late 1970s by students of the Latvian State Conservatory.
