31 декабря 1994 1-й и 2-й батальоны 131-й бригады, не встретив сопротивления вышли в район железнодорожного вокзала города Грозный, где соединились с подразделениями 81-го мотострелкового полка (мотострелковый батальон и танковая рота).
Когда колонны встали вдоль улиц, в 19.00 они были атакованы превосходящими силами (численностью свыше тысячи человек), понесли большие потери и отошли к вокзалу, где попали в окружение. Бой продолжался всю ночь. Все это время командир бригады полковник Иван Савин до хрипоты просил штаб о помощи. А когда утром понял, что помощь не придет, погрузил раненых на два БМП и пошел на прорыв. Хриплый голос командира в прямом эфире слышали до той поры, пока он не был убит... Но подкрепление так и не было выслано... Их предали и бросили на погибель.
