Хозяйка брила лбы, то есть сдавала крестьян в рекруты. При приёме
рекрута ему сбривали спереди волосы. По указам 1766 и 1779 годов дворяне
могли во всякое время года сдавать в любом угодном им количестве крестьян в
солдаты, получая за лишних рекрутов квитанции, которые можно было
предъявить в будущие наборы. Это превратило «бритьё лбов», с одной стороны,
в меру наказания: помещик мог в любое время оторвать неугодного ему
крестьянина от семьи и сдать – практически навсегда – в солдаты. С другой –
сдача рекрутов сделалась доходным, хотя и официально запрещённым промыслом:

со своей рабочей силой
