Василий Блаженный — московский юродивый. Родился в декабре 1469 года в селе Елохово (сейчас — в городской черте Москвы), на паперти, куда пришла молиться его мать о «благополучном разрешении».
Трудолюбивый и богобоязненный юноша, — повествует житие, — Василий был удостоен дара прозрения, который обнаружился случайно. После шестнадцати лет и до самой смерти совершал подвиг юродства, без крова и одежды, подвергая себя великим лишениям. Житие Блаженного описывает, как он и словом и примером учил народ нравственной жизни. Он круглый год ходил без одежды, ночевал под открытым небом, постоянно соблюдал пост, терпел лишения.
