Радость моя! Пост состоит не в том только, чтобы есть редко, но в том, чтобы есть мало; и не в том, чтобы есть однажды, но в том, чтобы не есть много.
Неразумен тот постник, который дожидается определенного часа, а в час трапезы весь отдается ненасытному вкушению и телом, и умом.
Истинный пост состоит не в одном изнурении плоти, но и в том, чтобы ту часть хлеба, которую ты сам хотел бы съесть, отдать алчущему.
К строгому посту святые люди приступали не вдруг, делаясь постепенно и мало-помалу способными довольствоваться самою скудною пищею.
В той мере, как плоть постящегося становится тонкою и легкою, духовная жизнь приходит в совершенство и открывает себя чудными явлениями.

True fasting consists not only in the exhaustion of the flesh, but also in the fact that the part of the bread that you yourself would like to eat is given to the hungry.
The holy people did not begin strict fasting all of a sudden, becoming gradually and little by little able to be content with the very meager food.
To the extent that the flesh of the fasting person becomes thin and light, the spiritual life comes to perfection and opens itself up with miraculous manifestations.
