Восемь "слов против иудеев" произнесены были св. Иоанном Златоустым в Антиохии в два приема: первые три - осенью 386, а последние пять - осенью же 387 года. Поводом к их произнесению послужило то печальное обстоятельство, что многие христиане - или по старой привычке, или по неразумию и увлечению - принимали участие в совершавшихся местными иудеями праздниках и постах, и посещали синагоги. Против этого неразумия и направлены слова Златоуста, который выясняет в них, что иудейство уже потеряло свое значение и потому соблюдение его обрядов противно воле Божией.
Eight "words against the Jews" were pronounced over. John Chrysostom in Antioch in two steps: the first three - in the autumn of 386, and the last five - in the autumn of 387 years. The reason for their utterance was the sad fact that many Christians — either by old habit or by foolishness and passion — took part in the festivals and fasts committed by local Jews, and visited the synagogues.
