This sura points out some qualities characteristic of hypocrites: they say with their own lips that they are believers, in fact they are liars. They hide behind their false oaths, like a shield, delivering them from the stigma of unbelief, which they adhere to, and from punishment for it. The surah also indicates that their appearance is pleasant and attracts the attention of those who look at them; and they are eloquent - therefore people are willing to listen to their speeches. At the same time, their hearts are empty without faith and lifeless, like logs.
