6 апреля 1966 года лётчик совершал полёт на Як-28 вместе со штурманом Ю.Н. Яновым, когда на высоте 4000 метров отказали двигатели, и реактивный самолёт стал падать. Чтобы не допустить падения самолёта на жилые кварталы Западного Берлина, Капустин и Янов отказались от катапультирования. Капустин старался вывести машину в безопасное место и это удалось — самолёт упал в озеро Штёссензее.
Указом Президиума Верховного Совета СССР от 10 мая 1966 года Капустин и Янов награждёны орденами Красного Знамени, посмертно.
