Действие романа происходит в отдалённом будущем, когда человечество совершило немало важнейших открытий. В частности, межпланетные путешествия стали уже едва ли не обыденностью, да и машину времени удалось создать. Питер Максвелл, профессор кафедры сверхъестественных явлений, в результате сбоя транспортной системы во время путешествия оказывается на таинственной Хрустальной планете, хранилище таких знаний, которые люди и вообразить-то не в состоянии. Вскоре он понимает, что хозяева этой планеты предлагают ему (и человечеству) все эти знания, хотя и не просто так, а в обмен на таинственный Артефакт, добытый одной из экспедиций Института времени где-то в юрском периоде. Дело осложняется тем, что Артефакт желают выкупить колёсники — странная чужая раса, живущая за пределами известного людям космоса. Вскоре становится ясно, что тут не обойтись без помощи «маленького народца» — гоблинов, троллей, фей, живших на Земле ещё до появления человечества... а ныне обитающих в резервации, которая и носит название «Заповедник гоблинов»
The action of the novel takes place in the distant future, when humanity made many important discoveries. In particular, interplanetary travels have already become almost commonplace, and it was possible to create a time machine. Peter Maxwell, a professor at the Department of Supernatural Phenomena, as a result of a failure of the transport system, during the trip, finds himself on a mysterious crystal planet, a storage of such knowledge that people are not able to imagine. He soon understands that the owners of this planet offer him (and humanity) all this knowledge, although not just like that, but in exchange for a mysterious artifact, obtained by one of the expeditions of the Institute of Time somewhere in the Jurassic period. The matter is complicated by the fact that the artifacts want to redeem the wheels - a strange alien race, living outside the known to people of space. It soon becomes clear that it is impossible to do without the help of a “little people” - goblins, trolls, fairies living on earth even before the appearance of humanity ... and now living in a reservation, which is called the “goblin reserve”
