Samuel Barber (1910 - 1981) is an American composer. In 1936 he wrote the 1st string quartet and decided to arrange the slow adagio part for orchestra. He sent the score to Artur Toscanini. Toscanini played this "Adagio" in 1938. This is how one of the hits of 20th century music was born - the famous "Adagio for Strings" by Samuel Barber
