С середины первого тысячелетия н.э. наблюдается переселение на север, вероятно, довольно значительных групп степняков угров из Прииртышья, в результате чего в Нижнем Приобье возникает новая культура, легшая в основу культуры современных хантов. Угорские группы, проникавшие на север, попав в условия таежной полосы утратили коневодство и приспособились к оленеводству. Однако память о коневодстве сохранилась в терминологии, фольклоре и изобразительном искусстве. В культурах северных охотничьих племен появились черты южного происхождения, в том числе и среднеазиатские (в языке, искусстве, ткацком деле, одежде и т.д.) Соврменная культура обских угров (хантов и манси) является сплавом типичной таежной и множества элементов более южной культуры. Памятники VIII — IX вв. свидетельствуют не только о тюркизации местной культуры, но и о проникновении самих тюрков с их обычаем погребать покойного с внузданным конём (курганные могильник на Оби в Ордынском районе). Поясной набор, железные наконечники стрел и бусы хорошо датируют погребения VIII — IX вв. Подобные захоронения, но лишь с головой и ногами коня, обнаружены работами экспедиции на Оми и на р. Уени.
