У Мусоргского родилась смелая мысль: а что, если воплотить в музыке собственные впечатления, воскресить виденные в жизни сценки, эпизоды? Для этого пришлось бы самому сочинять слова. Трудно, но зато была бы возможность писать прямо «с натуры».
Вот, например, сценка, которая глубоко запала в душу и не дает покоя. Однажды, когда он гостил в деревне, его внимание привлек такой эпизод: несчастный юродивый, нищий, в отрепьях, объяснялся в любви молодой крестьянке. Он умолял ее о ласковом взгляде, а сам стыдился своего безобразия, отлично понимая, что ничего ему не дождаться от нее, кроме насмешки... И Мусоргский принялся сочинять вокальную пьеску, которую он назвал «Светик Савишна». Слова и музыка рождались почти одновременно.
