Песня исполняется от имени савояра, зарабатывающего в Германии песнями с дрессированным сурком (такое явление действительно имело место). В оригинале перемежаются немецкие и французские строки. На русском языке более всего известен вариант, имеющий очень мало общего с текстом Гёте (в сущности, ничего, кроме припева). Существуют и другие, более близкие к оригиналу, переводы, часто исполняется перевод С. С. Заяицкого («Мальчик с сурком»). В первом издании песни Бетховена (1805) приведены только слова первого куплета с припевом.
The song is performed on behalf of the Savoyard, who earns money in Germany by singing with a trained marmot (such a phenomenon did take place).
