Восемь русских офицеров в ходе Русско-японской войны оказываются захваченными в плен. Они сидят в тесном подвале без окон и какой-либо информации извне. Что с ними будет дальше? Как развиваются военные действия? Ни на один из подобных вопросов ответа нет. А тут еще раз в сутки в комнате появляются несколько японских военных, которые выбирают одного из пленников и уводят. Своего товарища больше никто не увидит и о его судьбе не узнает. Что случается с ними там, наверху? В этой трагической истории есть и предательство, и разочарование, и любовь к Родине.
