The violin was the favorite instrument of Jan Sibelius. In his youth, the composer dreamed of a brilliant career as a violin virtuoso. Alas, these dreams were not destined to come true: his studies on this instrument began too late, in addition, Sibelius suffered a shoulder injury that forced him to completely abandon his ambitious intentions. Nevertheless, the composer never lost interest in the violin and could indulge in improvisations on it for a long time. Approaching the 40-year milestone, he noted: "There is still a part of me that aspires to become a violinist, and this part manifests itself in an unusual way." Soon Sibelius began work on his only violin concerto, in which he put all his love and intimate knowledge of the instrument.
The concert is famous for its extreme complexity: it clearly expresses the composer's desire to identify the infinite expressive possibilities of the violin - those that were not accessible to him as a performer. The Berlin premiere of the composition was an incredible success, and his music prompted one of the critics to make a bizarre comparison with “picturesque Scandinavian winter landscapes, in which artists achieve rare, sometimes hypnotic and powerful effects through an exquisite play of white on white”.
