Свт. Феоктист, архиепископ Новгородский, до получения кафедры был игуменом Благовещенского монастыря близ Новгорода. По смерти архиеп. Климента в 1300 г. новгородцы избрали его Владыкой, а митрополит Максим с русскими епископами Симеоном Ростовским и Андреем Тверским рукоположил свт. Феоктиста во епископа Новгородского. Главной заботой владыки Феоктиста было восстановление и постройка храмов. Он сам освятил соборы во имя свв. Бориса и Глеба и во имя свв. отец I Вселенского Собора. При нем была благоустроена обитель на Валааме. В 1307 г. по слабости здоровья святитель удалился в Благовещенский монастырь, где жил до самой смерти, предаваясь подвигу безмолвия. Прославление св. Феоктиста, вследствие чудесных исцелений от его мощей, совершилось в 1664 г. В 1786 г. мощи святителя были перенесены в Юрьев, где архим. Фотий устроил в местном соборе в честь его придел.
