Св. пророчица Анна состояла в супружестве с Елканой и была бесплодной. Елкана взял себе еще другую жену, Феннану, от которой рождались дети. Анна сильно скорбела о своем несчастии и, каждый день молясь о разрешении бесплодия, дала обет посвятить дитя Богу. Однажды, когда она пламенно молилась в храме, священник Илий решил, что она пьяна, и стал ее упрекать. Но святая кротко излила свою скорбь и, получив благословение, вернулась домой. После этого Анна зачала и родила сына, которого назвала Самуилом (что значит "Испрошенный у Бога"). When the child reached adolescence, his mother brought him to the priest Elijah, and he left Samuel to serve at the tabernacle. Samuel became the last judge of Israel and the prophet. Anna, however, gave birth to her husband three more sons and two daughters.
