В романе М. Н. Загоскина "Аскольдова могила" изображены времена великого князя Киевского Владимира Святославовича. Сюжет развивается на фоне основной проблемы той эпохи - борьбы отживающего язычества с новой, побеждающей религией - христианством. На этот конфликт накладывается еще и конфликт династический - в нем участвуют тайные приверженцы давно свергнутых древнерусских князей Аскольда и Дира.
