Орфей,- так гласит старинное предание,- своей нежной лютней и чарующим пением покоряет сердце прекрасной Эвридики, которая становится подругой его жизни. Но молодуюю женщину кусает змея, и она умирает. Смолкает чудесная лютня скорбящего Орфея, песнь его больше не завораживает людей, она не взывает больше ни к диким зверям, ни к деревьям, ни к цветам. А ведь раньше искусство Орфея не только разгоняло плохое настроение людей, но и укрощало свирепых зверей, очаровывало деревья и даже приводило в движение скалы. В живой природе никто и ничто не могло устоять против его чарующей музыки. Но теперь его лютня нема, безмолвны его уста. Мир, казалось вымер, ведь музыка покинула его.
После грустных раздумий Орфей отважился на храбрый подвиг: он решает спуститься за Эвридикой в подземное царство и отыскать свою возлюбленную. У владыки подземного царства Аида (называвшегося в римской мифологии Плутоном) есть злой сторожевой пёс Цербер. Он охраняет вход в подземное царство, но это не останавливает Орфея: стоило заиграть его волшебной лютне и политься его песне, как Цербер пропускает влюблённого Орфея. От чар Орфея не уйти ни Плутону, ни его супруге Персефоне. Владыка подземного царства уступает мольбам певца: он разрешает Орфею увести обратно в мир живых обожаемую им Эвридику, но с тем условием, что весь путь, пока они опять не окажутся на поверхности земли, он не должен видеть её лица.
Орфей отправляется в путь со вновь обретённой Эвридикой и, как ему это ни тяжело, не глядит на возлюбленную. Он даже не объясняет причину своего поведения. Но Эвридика не даёт ему покоя и расспрашивает до тех пор, пока Орфей, в конце концов не нарушает приказа Плутона и не оборачивается назад. И в то же мгновение Эвридика навеки исчезает. Несчастный, навек умолкнувший Орфей, с разбитым сердцем и разбитой лютней, бродит по свету среди людей, пока на берегах Эброса его не настигает суровая кара: его убивают вакханки.
